What It Means To Be A Fiduciary

The highest legal standard of care. Ours since 1991.

A fiduciary is legally required to act in your best interest at all times, in every recommendation, in every conversation. This is the highest standard of care in financial services. It differs from the suitability standard that applies to many brokers and commission-based advisors, where a recommendation only needs to be suitable, not necessarily optimal for you.

As a registered investment advisor, we have operated under the fiduciary standard since the firm was founded in 1991. We neither pay nor accept referral fees. Every professional we introduce is someone we know from direct experience, not a financial arrangement. The only compensation we earn is the advisory fee you pay us. That alignment is the foundation of everything we do.

Every advisor on our team holds the CFP® certification or is an active CFP® certification candidate. CFP® professionals are held to a fiduciary standard when providing financial planning services.

Our Network

Thirty-five years of relationships with the professionals our clients need most.

Our Network Graphic

Our network is not a referral list. It is a set of trusted professional relationships built through decades of working on real client situations together. When a situation calls for a specialist, we connect our clients with people whose work we know firsthand.

Those relationships span attorneys, tax advisors, risk specialists, lending partners, property experts, and business exit advisors. And several that most firms don’t think to cultivate, charitable giving strategists, elder care consultants, college planning guides, and independent trustees. For 401(k) plan needs, our sister company, RPS Retirement Plan Advisors, offers expertise as a 3(38) plan fiduciary.

FAQs

Q: What does fee-only mean?

A: Fee-only means a financial advisor is compensated solely by advisory fees paid directly by clients. Richard P. Slaughter Associates receives no commissions, no product payments, and no referral fees of any kind. We were among the first fee-only advisory firms in the United States, operating this way since 1991.

Q: What is a fiduciary?

A: A fiduciary financial advisor is legally required to act in your best interest at all times. This is the highest legal standard of care in financial services, distinct from the suitability standard that applies to many brokers. As a registered investment advisor, we operate under the fiduciary standard in every client relationship.

Q: What does CFP® mean?

A: CFP® stands for CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™, a designation awarded by CFP Board that requires rigorous education, a comprehensive examination, documented experience, and ongoing ethics requirements. CFP® professionals are held to a fiduciary standard when providing financial planning. Every advisor on our team holds the CFP® certification or is an active CFP® certification candidate.

Q: Who is a good fit?

A: We work with families and individuals with significant wealth, high income, business interests, equity compensation, or a major financial transition ahead. If we are not the right fit, we will connect you with someone who is.

Q: Do you work with my CPA and attorney?

A: Yes. Aligning across your professional team is a core part of how we work. We communicate directly with your CPA and attorney throughout the year.

Q: Where are your clients located?

A: We are based in Austin and serve clients across all of Texas, nationally, and internationally.

CFP Board owns the certification marks CFP®, CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™, and CFP® (with plaque design) in the U.S., which it awards to individuals who successfully complete CFP Board’s initial and ongoing certification requirements.
