A financial plan is only as strong as the team behind it. Over 35 years, we have built a network of trusted specialists so that when your life requires more than financial advice, you are never starting from scratch.
A financial life is not just a portfolio. It is a business you may one day sell, parents who need more support than they are letting on, an art collection that needs proper protection, mineral rights that need the right expertise, or a season of life that requires more than financial advice alone. It is the full texture of a life that grows complex in ways no single spreadsheet can capture.
That complexity is exactly why the quality of a firm’s professional network matters as much as the quality of its investment process.
Beyond the Expected Names
Most people understand that a wealth advisor should have relationships with CPAs, estate attorneys, and insurance professionals. Those connections are foundational, and ours run deep. Some clients come to us having never worked with any of them and need trusted introductions from the start. Others arrive with existing relationships already in place, and part of our work is understanding where gaps exist and whether the people they are working with are the right fit for where their financial life is heading.
But the situations that arise over the course of a client relationship rarely stop there. Those relationships span attorneys, tax advisors, risk specialists, lending partners, property experts, and business exit advisors. And several that most firms do not think to cultivate: charitable giving strategists, elder care consultants, college planning guides, and independent trustees. For 401(k) plan needs, our sister company RPS Retirement Plan Advisors offers expertise as a 3(38) plan fiduciary.
A client came to us with a potentially valuable piece of artwork that represented a meaningful portion of his overall estate. With several children as heirs and limited liquidity elsewhere, the piece could have created real friction at the time of his passing. We located an appraiser with the right expertise to give us a credible preliminary valuation. She determined the piece would not affect the estate plan in a material way. The client’s relief was immediate. A question that had been quietly sitting in the background was answered, and the potential for family conflict was removed before it ever had a chance to develop.
How the Network Gets Built
The professionals in our network have earned their place in it. They are responsive, genuinely expert in their area, and share our orientation toward the client’s interest. They are also honest about the boundaries of their expertise, and when a situation calls for someone better positioned to help, they say so and make sure the client gets there. That kind of integrity is what we look for when adding anyone to our network.
We are also always adding to the network. When a client is already working with a CPA, an attorney, or another specialist, we pay attention. If that relationship is strong, it may belong in our network for the benefit of other families in the future. The best networks are never finished.
A Hub, Not Just a Rolodex
What has developed over time is something more than a list of contacts. Other professionals reach out to us on behalf of their own clients when a situation falls outside their lane. A CPA whose client’s aging parents are showing signs of cognitive decline and needs to know who handles that with the right expertise and care. An estate attorney looking to point a client toward someone who can evaluate private health care options. A business owner’s accountant who knows a liquidity event is coming and wants their client to have the right planning team in place before it does.
That kind of reciprocal trust does not happen quickly. It is the result of 35 years of showing up well for the people we serve and the professionals we work alongside.
A client came to us through his estate attorney. She had built a comprehensive estate plan for him as he approached a business sale and recognized that the estate plan was only part of what he needed. The liquidity event coming his way would require a full wealth management plan: an investment strategy for the proceeds, a sustainable spending plan, and someone who would stay close to make sure the money lasted. She reached out to us on his behalf. He became a client, and that relationship has been in place ever since, his expenses under control, his investments managed with discipline, and the proceeds of a lifetime of work put to purposeful use.
Is the team behind your financial plan equipped to handle every dimension of what your life may require?
What This Means in Practice
When something arises in a client’s life that falls outside the boundaries of traditional financial advice, our first call is usually to someone we have known for years. Not a search. Not a referral from a directory. A direct introduction to a person whose work we know, whose values align with ours, and who we trust to treat our client the way we would.
That is what accumulates over the course of a long advisory relationship. The connections deepen. And when life gets complicated, you are not facing it alone or starting from scratch.
At Richard P. Slaughter Associates, this is how we have always thought about True Wealth Management. A portfolio is part of the picture. The relationships that support the rest of your life are the other part.
If any of this resonates — whether your life has grown more complex than your current advisory relationship accounts for, you are facing a transition that requires more than investment advice, or you want to know that the team behind your plan has the network to match — we would welcome a conversation.
